Explore Expressive Power of Music with Sound Design

We all love to go for movies to feel something. Sound is one of the two main senses that we experience in cinema. Sound has the power to influence us on an elementary and subconscious level, and that can make it very impactful in a way that the image cannot be.

Sound supports the story and enhances a scene. We all get mesmerized by the sound of rain, the rustling of tree leaves, horses’ hoof, cracking of window, bang of gunfire and rumbling sound of the train in the movies. This is the magic of sound designing.

This tool is used by the filmmakers to create an emotion, portray something that is not on screen and makes us petrified or creates humor. Audio can create the illusion of something which was not present at the time of making a film.

Sound design is the art of making things more realistic and believable. It can make the audience jump creating suspense in horror movies and brings to life to the games adding mood to it.

Broadly speaking, it refers to the technical process of recording, manipulating, acquiring and generating audio elements and effects. It is engaged in a variety of disciplines such as filmmaking, television shows, sound recording and production, theatre, live performance, ringtones, and video games.

Even if we don’t know any of the above, and just love producing music for fun, being creative in sound design can help us shape our own character, a sound by which we can be identified.
Although over the past few years, we have witnessed the release of many hardware and software that can be used to explore sonic areas never thought possible before, a Sound Designer must possess an array of creative and technical skills to be successful.

A well-developed sense of hearing, sensitivity to timbre, rhythm, harmony, melody and musical structure, and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of music genres and history are the important attributes of a good sound designer.

Designing sound is not rocket science or brain surgery, but to get it right, dedication and keen ear is a must.

However, we can always improve our deep understanding of psychoacoustics, system engineering, computer networking, component integration, acoustics, and the system of sophisticated audio distribution by pursuing a masters degreein film and television for sound designing.

Sound designer enables the connection of the viewer to the movie even if their eyes are not glued to the screen. The most amazing thing with sound is if the Sound Designer does his job perfectly no one even knows they were there.

Much of the work of a Sound Designer work deals with the subconscious. They need to be creative in their approach and also should be able to explain their specific choices. Being creative in charge of the soundscape for production is a huge responsibility.

Understanding the tremendous power of sound to enhance the storytelling process, and making a truly unforgettable experience for the audience is the job of a good sound designer.Every sound has a message which brings out the emotion of the listener.
